WHAT IS COVID-19 ANTIBODY TESTING?
- This test is not the nasal swab used to determine active infection. This antibody test is a finger stick blood test used to detect the presence of COVID-19 antibodies in the blood. The blood test is used to determine if you have previously been exposed or may be an asymptomatic carrier of the virus.
- The IgG/ IgM COVID-19 antibody test determines the presence of a protein created by plasma cells that is used by the immune system to neutralize pathogens such as the COVID-19 corona virus. Results are provided within 3-7 minutes.
- Clinical trials for our test kits report an efficacy rate of 99.6%, however there are some limitations. False negatives can occur if the client is tested too soon following a suspected exposure, therefore we recommend that all clients wait at least 14 days following any symptoms, like fever, cough or shortness of breath, to get the antibody test.
- IgM antibodies are produced within 3-5 days following COVID-19 infection. Once infected, they are produced rapidly, maintained for a short period of time and disappear quickly. A POSITIVE IgM result can be an indicator of an acute or recent infection. Clients with a + IgM should be isolated immediately and follow current quarantine protocol as they may still be contagious, regardless of the presence or absence of symptoms.
- IgG antibodies are produced within 8 days after a COVID-19 infection but remain for a long time and disappear slowly. A POSITIVE IgG result in blood is an indicator of current or previous infection. Symptomatic clients with a + IgG should be isolated immediately and follow current quarantine protocol.
- Those with + antibodies are considered to have immunity to the virus allowing for a quicker re-entry into society.
- This test is designed as a screening tool. Positive IgG/IgM screens may be followed up by lab testing, as needed, to confirm the positive result.
- Those who have completely recovered from COVID-19 may have immune-boosting antibodies in their plasma—called “convalescent plasma”—that could be used to treat critically ill COVID-19 patients. The Food and Drug Administration is allowing the transfusion of convalescent plasma as an investigational treatment. If you screen positive for COVID-19 antibodies, please consider contacting Vitalant Denver to see fill out a pre-screening form to if you are eligible to donate plasma.
- Clients with positive antibodies will receive a certificate stating that date and time of the test. This certificate may be used to provide employers, schools and other agencies with evidence of your immunity.
